Jewish Calendar
Unlike the calendar used in the United States, which is based on the revolution or the earth around the sun, the Jewish calendar is based on the moon. There are twelve months in a regular year in the Jewish calendar, and these correspond to the English months as follows:
Hebrew Month Corresponding English month
Nissan March-April Iyar April May Sivan May June Tammuz June July Ab July August Ellul August September Tishri September October Cheshvan October November Kislev November December Tebeth December January Shevat January February Adar February March
The Jewish calendar has 354 days. In a Jewish leap year, of which there are seven in every cycle of nineteen years, an entire extra month is added, and it is called Adar II (Adar Sheni). It follows the regular month of Adar, and has 29 or 30 days. Just as the Church utilizes the Church-calendar for its religious purposes, so the Jewish people use the Jewish calendar only for their religious observances. |
