The Gilbertines The one, wholly English monastic order, the Gilbertines, were an austere sect, somewhat similar to the Cistercians. They permitted men and women to share the same community, as the Celtic monasteries did, but, unlike the Celtic model, the Gilbertines kept them strictly separate, not allowing them to even see each other. Their mother house was at Sempringham, Lincolnshire, and the Gilbertines were under the rule of its Master. |
